Food project
HUMANITIES Reflection
In this project we really had to think about our food ethic and decide what actually is our ethic. In our humanities class we watched and researched many different food ethics and why people ate the way they ate. In chemistry we focused on why certain things happen in food. Like emulsions and different susbatsutions for eggs. We were asked to create a meal and invite people to come and eat. We had to pick a topic and create a menu. We needed to first understand what is our food ethic and tie our food ethic into the meal and understand what's happening chemically.
Our group decided to go with the theme spring. We made very springy meals. We had a appetizer a salad, a lamb burger and a yummy sorbet dessert. Our group I feel did super well. We had so much fun making the food and delivering it. Everyone at the dinner was talking and enjoying. It was such a fun experience that we all enjoyed.
Doing this project in both humanities and chemistry was super interesting I not only learned about the ethic why I was making thaI food I also learned what's actually happening chemically in my food.impacted my learning by getting both sides of the food I made. I learned what's actually happening when I make ranch. The humanities side i learned what I eat ranch because that's my ethic.
My main take away from this project is that we are so lucky to have food. That we can decide what we want to eat that we have these choices to be vegan or what ever your food ethic is. My ethic has definitely changed throughout this project. I want to knowwhat I am putting in my body and be okay with it. I would just eat whatever tasted good now I am more conscience about it. I loved this project so much because I love food so much! It had me think so deeply about everything in this food industry the butchering the food flying from different countries the cost everything.

America the land of the free and delicious food! We are so lucky to live in this country where we have such easy access to different types of food. We can get food that can be so cheap and easy to find. The not so cheap food still is really accessible to get. What are you feeling that day to eat? Mangos? Mexican? Chinese? You can eat whatever you want! There is no denying that we are lucky we get those choices but with that said I am still developing my food ethic on if I want to eat certain things. I have had a long journey that started ever since I was younger. As I grew up different experiences have shaped my ethic to what it is now.
My family and I grew up in Chicago where there are a plethora of food choices. Living in a city has definitely influenced my food ethic. My mom and I went to Starbucks almost every morning. We ordered a bacon sandwich and hot chocolate. Sometimes I would just order a cup of whip cream which was so fun for me though. My mom had just as much fun. We went to this cute little coffee place called Village Grind, and the place gave you a homey feeling when you walked in. My mom had a full time job, so going out to eat was something my family did often, considering she didn’t have a lot of time after work to come up with something to eat and make it . That is why I think I justify going out alot in my situation because how can you cook when you have a full time job and are completely drained? Even though the food was not organic, it was still fun going out and we all bonded, and I will always remember those experiences. We brought that tradition to Durango. My family and I went to Nayarit and we met Jime, the best waiter we’ve ever had. I love new experiences and when you go out you get them.
Organic, never heard of it? Organic was not a thing for my family when I was growing up. I don't remember there being a whole lot of organic stores where we lived. Even if there was, it would be pretty expensive for us to constantly be shopping organic when there are other things to pay for. When I opened my pantry I saw such good food and if that were to drastically change with apples and no sugar granola bars, my entire family would not know what to do. (I'm not bashing on apples). We just weren't used to that. With that said, my family didn't really know what organic was, I mean sure I bet my parents knew about the organic foods, but it wasn't as big of deal there as it is in Durango. If we knew about it maybe we would buy more organic food just at the local Walmart.
As I said before, we ate a lot of food and none of it was organic besides the fruit and vegetables. We had five kids living in our house so we had to buy a lot of food. Here is a couple of examples I ate for snacks: golden sponge cake filled with cream filling also called a Twinkie, Little Debbies, and Hot Cheetos. I'm surprised I wasn't a big kid with all the process food I ate. I didn't realize that these food were bad for you. I just knew I liked them and ate them. For my parents, they knew I liked them and they were cheap so they bought them. My house was full of snacks because it was full of teenagers and the youngest, me. Fruit Roll Ups, Gogurts, strawberry shortcakes and alot more. So, when we moved here, the food choices we had were very limited. We had to make a very drastic life change from eating out alot to making more home made meals. Which is not a bad thing, it was healthier for us. It was a change.
Moving to Durango has me a lot more conscious with what I put into my body. I was realizing the bad food i've been eating was taking a toll on my body. My acne was getting worse, my hair was getting greasy, and I just didn't feel good. Now the unhealthy food always tastes good that will never change, but I can change if I can consume it. I'm not giving up bad food completely but I am trying to feel better about myself. That is my food ethic and I'm okay with that. As Long as I feel good inside with what i'm eating I'm okay if that is meat or not. My food ethic can definitely change. I've been introduced to so many different eaters, that interest me in the way they choose to eat. For now I'm okay with the food I am putting into my body. If that feeling doesn't stay the same then I'll look at what I want to change. That's my ethic but what's yours? Whatever we choose to put into our body is our choice. You decide your own food ethic and what you want to consume. It's your choice.

Chemistry Refelction
In this project we did have to design an experiment involving food. When asked “How can we design an experiment and measure the qualities and desirability of a finished recipe both quantitatively and qualitatively in order to determine the success of our recipe experimentation?” Well we can design a experiment and measure a finished recipe quantitatively by let's say in my experience I made ranch you can test the acidity of the lemon juice in the ranch testing the PH levels. You can do multiple test of ranch without lemon juice and see what the PH levels and compare that too a lot of acidic in ranch. You can use a ph stick and see what color it turns into. If it turns into yellow or orange it's very acidic. Or with numbers if its less than 7 is acidic. You can design and experiment qualitatively by maybe performing a taste test.
Cooking and doing science is similar in a lot of ways. When you make science you put a bunch of different chemicals into something to make and experiment and have a final product. When you cook you have a bunch of different ingredients that in the end have a final food product. They all use chemicals/ingredients to get a final product. Now science and cooking are different because the food already has the chemical reaction already in them. For example when I made ranch the mayonnaise already had an emulsion in there already. In science you use the raw materials like chemicals before getting changed and make the experiment then.

Seminar Reflection

For this project, We explored many topics that made my mind go into overdrive thinking. I chose to do my topic on gay marriage. Gay marriage is a very controversial topic, and depending on what side you are on, your opinion will most likely not change. When we did the seminar a comment was brought up that the person was against gay marriage in his early years but later came to accept it. I really appreciate that comment because it almost gave hope. Yes people are set in their ways with their beliefs but that doesn't mean it's set and stone. Change is possible. Discussions like we did with this project are what gets us there. I believe we can make a huge change and impact if we keep talking. I am personally on the pro side of gay marriage and believe it should be legal and accepted. I am always open and genuinely curious to see other people's sides and where they are coming from. I look at this project and I am grateful for it. To broaden my horizon and to listen.
As I was presenting my artwork during exhibition, I realized just how divided our population is on this issue. I was able to discuss this with several people in an open and honest manner. What I discovered during these conversations echoed what I wrote in my paper. I dug into researching where the other side is coming from. Each person I talked to had a different opinion on being for or against. I respect people that told me that they didn't agree with me on my topic. Because It just made me understand more than ever that the reason I am in support of gay marriage. I believe that everyone should be able to marry who they want. That love really is just love. I hate being told what to do, I don't want to be told who I can and cannot marry.I looked deeper in my feelings. It was my pride. I want to be able to do whatever I want in this life (within reason).
My understanding for the other side definitely has grown. When I was approached while presenting I was given an interesting insight. My paper is all about love and how every human is capable of love. What was brought up to me was that people all have different interpretations of love. That some people don't even think they know or can love. I was thrown off by that comment because my whole paper was about the feeling of love. I agree with what I said in my paper but I now have new insight I wish I would've thought about before. Its interesting that we have to parties, conservative and Democrats. We are lucky we are even able to talk about issues and have opinions. Another comment that was brought up was that we should have more political parties. In the election have not just a side with conservative and democrat. Such parties as maybe libertarian or working families parties.
My views on gay marriage have not changed. Although I do have a better insight on why some are against it. This entire project has opened my eyes and mostly ears. Listening is most important for not only me for everyone.Willingness to be disturbed is a great way to look at democratic society. To admit you are disturbed makes you think deeply about why you feel they way you do. To be disturbed means you are giving a chance to hear the other sides. We all need to be disturbed. I am very grateful to live in this country where I can choose what I believe in and not be prosecuted for my thoughts. I am willing to listen. I am willing to understand I am willing to be disturbed.

I was recently watching the news and saw the story about bakery owner Jack Phillips. As I watched this interview, a myriad of emotions and thoughts bounced through my mind. In case you are not familiar with this story, Jack Phillips refused to bake a wedding cake for same sex partners. His passionate refusal to bake this cake is due to his deeply held religious beliefs. As I listened I realized that this issue would not be easily resolved. I disagreed with his position, but honored his right to have it. I felt sympathy when he spoke about the issues his stance created for his business. I wondered if it is possible to find a common ground between people on both sides of this issue.
Merriam Webster defines marriage as “the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.” Both sides can agree that marriage is a legal contract. Both sides can also agree that marriage creates a state of unity and happiness between two people. We have to realize both sides can agree on a lot. We are not so different.
One reason why some people disagree with same sex marriage, like Jack Phillips, is that they think the bible prohibits it. Traditionally yes, Jesus defines marriage been between a man and a women. It's hard to change traditions especially ones that are so close to us. I can understand how hard it would be to go against something you follow and believe so deeply. Challenging your foundational beliefs is very difficult to do. It is possible though. We just have to listen to each other.
Same sex couples also have strong beliefs. Gay people do not believe they have made a choice to be gay. It is the way they were born. It is who they are. Being denied the right to marry the person they love is hard for them to accept. History has shown it works to change your way of thinking. Allowing interracial marriage was a big adjustment for people also. It was not till 1967 interracial marriage became legal everywhere. We adjusted from that. It would be absurd for us to see “colored” drinking fountains. We adapted and now it's normal. If we could just remember we all have love in us every single one of us, some of these conflicts would disappear.
One thing we can all agree on is love. No matter what you believe about marriage, we can all agree that all have the capacity for love. The main message of the bible is love. The message of family is love. Everyone loves love. Love is everywhere. Can we agree that marriage is just a word? If we took away the word marriage, the love for your spouse would not go away. Marriage is just a word to be able to be on the same insurance card. To be able to see each other on your deathbed on your last days. Who else would you want to be there with you?
I believe that any couple has the right to marry, regardless of their gender. I also respect people’s religious beliefs. However, the bible also says in 1Corinthians 13 that love is never wrong. I am a lover of people. I want people to live in a world where people are able to live without discrimination. No discrimination against gender, marriage, or religious beliefs. The right to marry whom you choose is the law now, and even if you do not agree with it, we have to follow the law. Lets accept it now. I want us to find a common ground on this controversial topic. I want everyone to feel comfortable. I know it is easier said than done. I think the common ground is as simple as recognizing the power of love. If we can do that people like Jack Phillips won't have to lose money for his hard earned bakery. If we do that everyone can have personal freedom, no matter who you are or what you believe in. Freedom is important. We can have loving families for kids. Families are love. We are lucky to live in this country. Let's make the best of it and live and let live.
